    Camera and lens correction

    Dear all,

    just a tought.

Camera and lens correction are important to most photo programs, in order to correct lenses distortions, barrel and cushion, etc.

Is this important for Zephyr ? My tests show excellent results with excellent cameras with very good lenses. At the other end, smartphones seem useless.

People using "amateur" cameras and lenses might be helped by the lens corrections of databases like Lensfun ? Integrated in Zephyr ?

    Regards, Philippe

    Hello Philippe,

3DF Zephyr needs un-distorted images. Zephyr will automatically detect and apply undistortion when needed. If you feed zephyr un-distorted/corrected images, you will remove information zephyr requires, and may get worse results than feeding the original images.

So, if you have calibrated your camera, or if you have the manufacturer data - go ahead in using the calibration (note that zephyr will download a calibration from our server if available, and if not, proceed with the autocalibration).

Smartphones can be successfully used, although you have to keep in mind their sensor size is significantly smaller. Additioanlly, smartphones may add some post processing filter that interferes with zephyr.

In short: try to feed the images directly from your device to zephyr, without any type of undistortion or post processing - the better the camera and lense in general, the better the result.
